A reference electrode is an electrode that has a stable and well-known electrode potential. The overall chemical reaction taking place in a cell is made up of two half-reactions, each of which describes the chemical changes that occur at one electrode.
To ensure that the reference electrode does not affect the measurement of the working electrode, it is standardized with constant (buffered or saturated) concentrations of each participant of the redox reaction.
Zn/ZnSO4 Reference electrodes are permanently installed in soil to monitor the potential of protected structures. The electrodes shall be installed near the protected structure.
The reference electrode is used inside internally protected steel water boxes, tanks, pipes, etc. and can be screwed into place for permanent attachment using a weld-in flange. The measuring cell is insulated with insulating material so that the only exposed surface is the circular base at the bottom.
